What is GFGNL?

Government of Gujarat has setup an SPV namely “Gujarat Fibre Grid Network Limited (GFGNL)” to implement Phase-II of BharatNet Project in Gujarat under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat. GFGNL was set up on 30th September, 2016 under Company’s Act, 2013.


What is the scope of this project?

As per current requirement, GFGNL is going ahead with BharatNet Phase-II wherein total 7692 Gram Panchayats under 135 Blocks from 22 Districts are to be connected on Fibre as per the guidelines provided by BBNL.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) among the four parties namely, USOF, Department of Telecommunications, Government of India, BBNL, The Government of Gujarat and the SIA Gujarat Fibre Grid Network Limited, has been signed on 27-12-2017.

What are the envisaged benefits of this projects?

The vision is provide Integrated Services to the Citizens and to lit up every household in future with access to video capable broadband at an affordable tariff by leasing bandwidth to private players.


What are the services provided By GFGNL?

GFGNL is mandated to connect a total of 7692 Gram panchayats under 135 Blocks from 22 Districts of Gujarat on Fibre.


Who is funding this project?

Project is funded by Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), Government of India through BBNL.


What is BBNL?

Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL), is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), set up by the Government of India for the Establishment, Management and Operation of NOFN. BBNL has been incorporated as a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU)/ Company under Companies Act (1956). BBNL was incorporated on 25/02/2012.


What is NoFN?

The National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN – earlier name of BharatNet) is a government project aimed at providing broadband connectivity to 2,50,000 Gram Panchayats in an effort to provide last mile connectivity as critical infrastructure. Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL) was created to implement the project.

The project shall cover 7692 GPs spread across 22 districts of Gujarat.

Which methods shall be opted for laying of Optical fibre cable?

Horizontal Directional Drilling, Open cut by JCBs and Breakers, Structured Aerial Cabling and Manual boring (Moiling) methods will be used for OFC laying from Block to Gram Panchayats.


What are the different technologies being used in Bharat Net project for the Gujarat State?

Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) is used for the backbone network while Gigabit Passive Optical Networks (GPON) is the proposed access layer for Internet Data transmission from the State Data Centre to Gram Panchayats.

BBNL implemented Phase 1 through RailTel Corporation of India Limited (RCIL).


Why Optical fibre is being used for BharatNet Project?

The optical signal can travel longer distances carrying higher bandwidth as compared to other media.
